Our Story
In 2020, the American River Bike Patrol began providing volunteer trail safety support to Sacramento County Parks and its park rangers along the American River Parkway. In 2022, the ARBP was additionally authorized by the County of El Dorado to patrol the El Dorado Trail from Folsom to Camino. In 2023 the ARBP was authorized by the City of Roseville to patrol all of Roseville’s bike trails. And, in 2024, the State of California authorized the ARBP to begin patrolling within Folsom Lake and Auburn State Recreation Areas. Additionally, ARBP Bike Patrollers are authorized to patrol the 2.5-mile Johnny Cash Trail in Folsom. The ARBP’s service area now encompasses over 354 miles of bike paths and multi-use trails, including:
- American River Parkway (Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail) – 23 miles of Class I bike path, Discovery Park to Hazel.
- Folsom Lake State Recreation Area – 95 miles of Class I and natural surface, multi-use trails
- Auburn State Recreation Area – 100 miles of Class I and natural surface, multi-use trails
- City of Roseville – 27 miles of Class I bike paths
- City of Sacramento – 72.3 miles of Class I bike paths
- El Dorado County (El Dorado Trail) – 37 miles of Class I bike path and natural surface multi-use trail
In 2022 and 2024, the patrol was honored by the National Ski Patrol as the finest in the nation and on at least two occasions its members have been recognized as the nation's top bike patrollers.
Our Mission
The mission of the American River Bike Patrol (Patrol) is: to assist users of recreational trails with emergency medical and bike repair assistance, safety education, directions, and information about trails and trail etiquette; to serve as stewards of the trails and public lands it patrols; and to support public lands agencies and their respective law enforcement and EMS personnel with maintaining and improving public safety.
In fulfilling the Patrol’s mission, its members patrol trails, conduct safety educational programs including the American River Bike Academy, assist trail users with emergency first aid and bike repair, directions, trail information and trail etiquette, keep an eye on and report physical, landscape maintenance and safety issues for the trails they patrol, and generally do so with a concern for public safety.
