The Friends of Sailor Bar (FOSB) are dedicated to cultivating a community who values and actively supports the wildlife and their habitat along the American River, beginning with Sailor Bar. We also believe that the history of Sailor Bar and the American River can inform us on how human actions over time can change nature. Finally, we are committed to providing opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy nature and the history of Sailor Bar.
We are a grassroots modern-day community of compassionate nature-loving people who have fun working together to create opportunities to bring people to nature, and nature to people.
The hub of the FOSB consists of 10 talented volunteers who serve as the FOSB Stellar Steering Committee. The FOSB SSC works together to ensure that we are aligned and actively serving our mission and priorities. Everyone on the FOSB SSC is compassionate “doers”, reliable and dedicated.
Our values are to do our best to show Love and Grace, have fun, be nimble and to continually learn and evolve.
Our Compassion in Action priorities are:
- Keep Sailor Bar safe, pristine and a haven for people and animals to enjoy the quiet of Nature while ensuring that the well-being of wildlife is of the utmost priority.
- Host volunteer meetups to remove invasive plants that are harmful to the biodiversity of Sailor Bar, and sow native seeds and sprouts to enhance biodiversity.
- Provide opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy being at Sailor Bar by partnering with the Sacramento County Disability Advisory Commission, Regional Parks, California Native Plant Society and the disabled and non-disabled community in our endeavor to create a native plant sensory butterfly and bird garden with an adjoining All Persons Trail at Turtle Pond.
- Host monthly Fun and Educational Exciting events at Sailor Bar that emphasizes the importance of respecting the only Federally and State designated Wild and Scenic River running through an urban environment that we have right here in our community. The River is our Life Force!
- Utilize the rich history of Sailor Bar to teach share the heritage of the original indigenous inhabitants and the pioneers who came here during and after the gold rush. (This history chronicles the environmental impacts that gold mining, dredging and dams can have on a river system and about how, over time, nature can heal itself and recover into a rich riparian habitat for a variety of wildlife.)
- Establish and maintain partnerships with organizations and community leaders who are dedicated to maintaining, upholding and nurturing wildlife habitats.
