Sailor Bar is noted for its historic native American grinding rocks on its shoreline as well as for its gold mining history. The park is named for sailors who allegedly jumped ship during the gold rush to mine for gold. Several huge gold dredges operated at Sailor Bar in the early 1900’s, leaving huge rock piles throughout the park.
In 1908 a newspaper article was published which talked about a “Ghost of Sailor Bar” . This story was republished by the San Juan Record on September 28th, 1977. (The San Juan Record was published from 1933-1980). More recently mysterious rock cairns have appeared throughout the park and some people are wondering if the Ghost of Sailor Bar could could still be present at Sailor Bar!
